"Most people who blog do it because it's what they love to do, it's something they've always wanted to do and they are so passionate about it they're prepared to do it for years for free before gaining a well known name, big number in followers or likes etc."
Welcome back lovelies, I was so happy to see you all loved my blog post regarding overthinking, I'm hoping it helped you out. Before I get started, I'd just quickly like to apologise for being late, but HAPPY BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY GUYS!!
Today however I want to touch on something that was all over Twitter a few weeks a go, about Instagram. Now I didn't actually get involved with the whole Twitter debate but I'd be lying if I didn't say I have my own opinion about people buying likes or followers, because I do and I feel like sharing it with you.
Before I go ahead and jump into this I would just like to say that I am in no way pointing a finger at anyone, or a particular account, as shaming people isn't me. That will never be my aim believe me! But I have an opinion about this, that I feel is worth sharing.
I'm sure you all not only know what Instagram is, but you probably have an account of your own because let's face it if you don't, you're seriously missing out! Go get on the game, you won't regret it I assure you.
For me personally Instagram is my favourite social media to use, I love the way you can post whatever you fancy, I do take my Instagram fairly seriously. I make sure I don't just take the best quality photos possible, but I also like to edit my photos in a similar way to stick to my theme.
I haven't always been serious about Instagram mind you, when I started I simply used it to share photos without really focusing on a theme nor was I trying to achieve more followers than I had - It was just simply for fun. Which of course many people are just on Instagram to share photos without trying to create or build a brand. Since I started 'thatbridgegirl' I upped my game because I became aware of the possibilities available through social media.
I am a 'Lifestyle Blogger' and therefore I not only write about my life on my blog, but I also reflect that into my Instagram account and I'm really happy with the look I have started to create. I used to sit here and envy every other bloggers Instagram because it would always consist of such strong photos, followers and the theme would stand out. I honestly thought it was basically impossible to achieve this for myself. So instead of wishing I decided to go ahead and start doing, I upped my game found what works for me, and realised it's actually pretty easy to do.
I'm sure you do follow some bloggers yourself from all sorts of niches whether that be specifically fashion, beauty or lifestyle and I'm sure you're always impressed with the content they share. Anyway the point is, you can make an Instagram account about absolutely anything from food recipes, fitness, a clothing brand or even a dog!
There's something about Instagram that has come out recently and for me I feel like it's changed a few things. I have received tons of emails and spam comments regarding buying likes or followers - I'm sure you've also received these sorts of messages if you're trying to grow your account. For me, I have never and will never go ahead and buy Instagram likes or followers because in my eyes if you are paying money for this then you are not genuinely gaining true followers or likes, you are faking your numbers to look better and more appealing to others. At the end of the day these numbers matter regarding your brand and the way you're seen by others.
By paying you're skipping all of the important things, many people can take years to gain a good audience on Instagram, obviously also when you've got big numbers of followers or likes more brands will also start to notice you. Which of course is great and probably what you wanted in the first place, however most of these brands aren't actually aware that you have bought your followers or likes, because they can't sit there sieving through each account ensuring the numbers are truthful, they simply won't ave the time to do so. Now the thing is when you're going ahead and doing this you are not doing it for the right things, many bloggers have worked extremely hard to gain the respect from their readers, followers and the brands they work with. Most of them are dedicated to being honest to you guys, to be able to test products for example and then share their views on that product, they'll usually tell you if it's good or bad and we can trust what they say.
While I guess I can see why you might be tempted to go out and buy followers or likes, I strongly disagree with it and feel that you are simply ruining the authenticity behind bloggers. I think many people presume that blogging is easy, that all you do is write a few words on a page on the internet and press share but actually I can first handedly tell you it really isn't easy, it takes a lot of graft, passion and persistence. It doesn't just come down to writing, it's also taking the necessary photos that are relevant to the post, along with being active on all social media platforms and much more! To become successful in the blogging industry starting out is the hardest part, because you're basically a tiny fish in a sea of dolphins, why are people going to click the link on your page over the thousands of other well known bloggers?
Most people who blog do it because it's what they love to do, it's something they've always wanted to do and they are so passionate about it they're prepared to do it for years for free before gaining a well known name, big number in followers or likes etc. But unfortunately there are also the people out there that are only jumping on the band wagon to receive products from well known brands for free (or many other reasons) but they aren't prepared for work for it, so instead they buy followers or likes and basically cheat their way up the ladder.
For me being truthful has always meant absolutely everything to me, even before my blogging journey I'd ALWAYS ensure I'm honest with people. But I want my readers to feel that they can trust me 100% so if I was to go out and buy myself some followers or likes I'd be lying to you lot, because most of the people who do this obviously won't own up to it, because no one would notice right? Nope I'm telling you right now it's so easy to catch on and work out, once you know what you're looking for.
If someone has bought followers or likes at first you'd have no idea they have done it and you'll just be fooled by the numbers, unless you actually dig a little deeper that's the only way you'll notice. All you have to do is look at the numbers, click on the followers, click a few of the profiles and you'll know straight away if it's a genuine profile, a fake or even a robot account. The fake accounts will likely have no posts, not many followers and it'll just stand out that it isn't a real profile. I know this is a very controversial topic, some of you will agree and others will disagree with me but my view is simple. Bloggers and Influencers should have honest numbers that they've gained organically, over the years of blogging and these numbers should represent someone you can trust, let's face it; at the steak of it is your career and reputation if your followers who actually do watch or follow/support your journey knew you had bought your followers would they stick around?
I don't know what else to say about this other than the fact it really does bother me, sure you may say or think "why does it matter" because unless you're in the industry yourself starting out, I guess realistically it simply doesn't effect you. I mean I'm not going to sit here hating on people that do this, because I don't know they necessarily realise it's causing harm or that they're doing it to be malicious, I'm sure they're not but it does simply bother and upset me when I see people buying their way into this industry.
Since I personally upped my Instagram account I can happily say that I have gained roughly 400 new followers, it has certainly taken me some time and few months to get to where I am now with over 700 followers. But knowing these people are here because they want to be, makes me happy and knowing my hard work is starting to slowly pay off excites me. As much as I wish I could trust everyone to be truthful and authentic with social media, unfortunately I simply can't, as I do realise some people are like me and others just simply are not and it's a shame.
One other thing I'd like to add, is that many bloggers would carry on doing what they are doing even if they had no followers, no name and they weren't necessarily noticed for the work they're doing because they're so passionate and love it so much! -Which for sure is me.
So next time you get a message offering you likes or followers for money, please really think about it, work out if you really want to do it that way and basically cheat yourself to the top or if you'd rather be able to earn your followers or likes through hard work and dedication to always feel proud of any increase you gain. If you are one of the small bloggers out there in the world who is also trying to make it organically and seriously loves what you do, even without the following or name to yourself yet like myself then please just know I'm proud of you too. Instagram is a little tricky recently as I have found there are also accounts out there who do the whole follow, unfollow thing just to get others to follow back and then they remove you the next day, which I personally also find so annoyingly frustrating because for me, my numbers always fluctuate. But hey, just know it won't stop me!!
Thank you as always for taking the time to read my blog, drop your thoughts, comments or advice below in the comments as always, feel free to speak your mind!
